AS OF RECENT

Currently Listening:
"Oregon Girl"
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

So the interview for INDIE TV went really well! Cameron and I werent really sure what to expect and it was really fun experience. We drove out to the studio, which was a really nice facility. I think seeing all the cameras, lights, teleprompters and crew got us a bit excited. We were greeted by Sean Delgado, a fellow Portland filmmaker who works on the show and was also sent to the BURNSIDE premiere back in July to shoot footage for the story on us. We also met the interviewer Laurie, who we sat down with while the crew was setting up to go over the questions she would be asking and go over the general structure of how the interview would go.

Soon we were on the couch with the cameras rolling...and it was definetly a different experience than being in front of the camera and acting. Obviously we were representing ourselves now, not portraying characters, so it was a little bit of a nerve racking thought! But nothing that got us too nervous, and I think we did pretty well for our first time doing anything like this. The questions were pretty basic, about the genesis of the project, how Cam and I began working together, future projects, etc. But yeah, overall a really great experience that'll be nice exposure when it airs!

I'm back from California as well. Was a nice weekend hangin out with family, very relaxed. Celebrated my grandpa's 80th birthday, stayed at a hotel/casino and layed out by the pool. I really wanted to try and see my boy Simon since he just moved down there for college a couple weeks ago, but I was there for such a short amount of time and was pretty busy every day. Simon, hope you're doin well down there man!

So now I'm just trying to enjoy my last days in Portland. I head back to NYC day after tomorrow, and I've been trying to prepare mentally for it. I usually completely block the reality of going back out of my head until hours before I actually leave, and that has never ended well for me. The shock and sudden-ness of the transition always ends up being overwhelming and not worth the extra couple days of untainted bliss in Portland. So now I've been trying to slowly come to grips with it day by day so that when Thursday finally comes around I'll feel more prepared. Maybe I'll even pull my suitcase out tonight. There might be some symbolic value to that physical action.

Its kind of ridiculous to me that two years after moving, I'm still going through this every time I come back home to Portland. Its definetly saying something about me, and the lifestyle that I've grown to crave. I honestly don't know what will happen, or where I'll go in two more years. I miss traveling, and I want to try and do it more soon to try and get a feel for other places I might like to be.

Sigh...its a interesting time right now. But you know, I'm excited to see how everything unfolds. This new year I have a feeling is going to filled with a lot of new, good things and theres no question that I'm ready for that.

BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN

Its come to my attention that two recently released major motion pictures - "I Now Pronouce You Chuck & Larry" and "Norbit" prominently feature some straight up yellowface... I realize that Rob Schnieder is half Filipino, but its pretty obvious in the film that he had some make up piled on to try and make him look super Asian. Not to mention the way he plays his character is apparently completely relying on acting out stereotypes. Its frightening to me that in this day and age that this kind of blatant racism is still viewed upon as being ok, and even comedic. It has everything to do in my opinion with a lack of speaking out on our part as a community and a people when these types of things happen. I'm actually more angered at the fact that there has been absolutely no response or reaction to stuff like this, than I am about the actual films. I had the feeling that things were starting to change, especially after events like the Hot 97 Tsunami Song, but I realize theres so much more to be done. Growing up, I never could understand what seemed like such passiveness amongst relatives and people I knew when it came to social and even political issues that I saw as having an impact on us. Hollywood is so incredibly irresponsible and willing to comply with anything for $$$$, as long as they'll be able to get away with it...it further feeds my distaste. Sigh...I'm just sick of it.

Peace to Justin Lin, Eric Byler, Julia Kwan, Chris Chan Lee, Michael Kang, Alice Wu, Wayne Wang, Georgia Lee, Jeff Adachi, and everyone else trying to flip the script...

RETURNING TO TWILIGHT

Currently Listening:
"Pulling Our Weight"
The Radio Dept.

Ahhhhh! So today (well, technically yesterday since its 5:30 in the morning lol) Cameron, Tony and myself took a little road trip out to the beach! It was nice to take that drive which is always so peaceful and get out of the city for a little bit. We walked around the town of Seaside, got burgers at a local diner, played like kids again in the arcade and of course walk along the beach. We even got to revist the location where Cam and I had shot a scene for our film "Twilight" two years earlier! Here's a short little video documenting that:

And just for the sake of it....the original "Twilight" trailer:

Greeeaaaaaat times.

Students from my old high school Lincoln High worked with the Northwest Film Center on a collection of short documentary films centered around the theme of community. Our boy Simon co-directed one of the films, titled "Playing T.A.G". The films were premiered at the Portland Art Museum so Cam, Carter and I rolled through to support!

FALL GOODS

Uniqlo stays doin their thing! Here's two photos from their lookbook from their Fall '07 womens line. I love the plaid hoodie and scarf, and their suggested use of the puffy down vest is intriguing as well...paired with the cummerbund it takes a garment that I typically associate with "super casual/copped at The North Face" (lol) and reimagines it with elegance.

And once again for the ladies but on a more traditional street wear tip, I've been watching Hellz Bellz for a minute with much interest. Its a definetly a clothing line with a lot of attitude, made for the girl that doesn't bite her tongue, and thats reflected in their t-shirt graphics and designs. I must admit, I wasn't a fan of aaallllllll their stuff... but from the looks of their Fall '07 collection, I was surprised to see a lot of evolution. They have expanded into denim, jackets, hoodies, and even some wool pieces, moving beyond being a simple t-shirt line, and now offering a much more complete collection. And the best thing about it to me is that these new more intricate pieces are more successful than their early shirts. That sweater with shoulder zipper is just dope.

The new Swagger flagship store just recently opened in Harajuku, Tokyo and it looks pretty damn cool. I don't know who designed the shop itself, but its obviously modeled to look like a recording studio- symbolic of Swagger's mission to marry fashion and music (Swagger is co-owned by Japanese rapper Big-O). Can't wait to check it out next time I'm able to get back there (sigh....)

And finally on a somewhat unrelated note, I just wanted to encourage everyone to check out the photography work of Dorothy Hong. I got hip to her through Theme magazine when she shot fashion designer Alexander Wang for the last issue. But yeah, check out her page at http://www.dothong.com, I like her portraits in particular.

TRESPASSING/SURPRISE PARTY

A little photo update from last Saturday...was all around one of best days this summer! 80+ degree weather, a gorgeous day...

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Headed down to this area of the city thats under heavy construction...a lot of new apartment complexes coming up right next to abandonded/run down wearhouses, but overall pretty deserted. Me and Keenan came here last week on a day of aimless exploring, and ended up discovering this crazy spot...so we had to bring Cam and Carter back.

Down that alley is a fence that keeps you from going down a small hill leading right to the Willamette river...we noticed that the concrete dipped down, allowing space to crawl underneath the fence, so thats what we did. Once you carefully trek your way down the ledge, you're basically standing on a bunch of rocks in the water...but to the right is the side of a building that juts out over the water, and there was a small hole smashed out in the concrete wall. Once you climb into the hole, you enter...

...THIS! A craaaazy underground space thats basically the foundation holding up the building above. It's just a huge network of criss crossing beams with the water splashing right beneath your feet!

It was awesome just sitting on the furthest beam and looking out at the river. We definetly want to shoot a film here. Don't go searchin and steal our idea.

So after a good day of exploration...me and Keenan headed over to The Henry apartment building in the Pearl District for our mom's little surprise party. Ahhhhh it was so amazing, we had the penthouse borrowed (top left with the deck), a place I used to look up at from the street dreaming and imagining what it'd be like to live there.
